[Abk. ARP, dt. »Adressauflösungsprotokoll«], ein Protokoll, das der Ermittlung einer Hardware-Adresse in einem lokalen
Netzwerk dient. Während im
Internet Pakete anhand ihrer
IP-Adresse vermittelt werden, erfolgt in lokalen Netzen die
Adressierung mittels einer (jeder Ethernetkarte
eindeutig zugeordneten) Hardware-Adresse, der 48 bit langen
MAC-Adresse. Dem Address Resolution Protocol kommt dabei die
Aufgabe zu, die 32 bit langen IP-Adressen in diese MAC-Adressen des physikalischen Netzwerks umzusetzen: Will ein
Rechner einen IP-Partner mit einer bestimmten IP-Adresse rufen, so wird ein ARP-Ruf (ARP Request) per MAC-Broadcast (
Broadcast) an alle Stationen des Netzwerks (LANs) gesendet und damit die LAN-Station, welche die gewünschte IP-Adresse besitzt, aufgefordert, ihre MAC-Adresse zurückzusenden (ARP Reply). Die so ermittelte Hardware-Adresse speichert der Rechner in einer dynamischen ARP-Tabelle, auf die dann für die weitere
Kommunikation zurückgegriffen wird.
